Overview

At AWS re:Invent 2023, the Financial Services team needed to communicate a broad, complex story — across Banking, Insurance, Payments, and Capital Markets — within a high-traffic expo environment.

We needed to create an immersive booth experience that builds authority and trust in a highly regulated industry — while encouraging attendees to explore deeper within 2–4 minutes.

The challenge

  • Has a broad portfolio that can be difficult to communicate quickly

  • Needed to stand out in a visually competitive expo hall

  • Wanted stronger storytelling centered on customer success and innovation

Things to Consider:

  • Large-scale LED technical requirements

  • Large touch targets for expo usability

  • Optimized for self-service AND ambassador-led use

  • Designed for 2–4 minute engagement window

The Process

Lots & lots of brainstorming + iterations!

v1 - quick blocking & simple prototyping

v4 - after several iterations + integrating client feedbacks; started integrating AWS branding guidelines

The solution

We partnered with the AWS Financial Services team to come up with multiple iterations (reached version 16!) and landed on the last design that integrated:

1. Clear & dynamic AWS branding
2. User-centered organization
3. Flexible storytelling
4. Captivating & educational content

The final product was a self-directed interactive experience on a 4K touchscreen, allowing users to explore AWS solutions based on their role, industry, and objectives.

Visual design
System

  1. High contrast for expo lighting

  2. Strong typography scale

  3. Motion-forward transitions

  4. Enterprise credibility with modern energy

Key Learnings

  1. Enterprise storytelling requires ruthless simplification

  2. Motion hierarchy is critical in large-scale environments

  3. Interactive kiosks must balance autonomy with guided flow

  4. Designing for events requires thinking about physical space, noise, and lighting

Why it worked

We captured the attention of over 50,000 attendees, showing firsthand how AWS puts its customers at the forefront of innovation. AWS Financial Services' team delivered a 2023 re:Invent Expo experience that sparked conversations that will continue to resonate with IT professionals long after the event.
